What’s it all about?

What is being human?

For me it’s about sharing a pretty small planet with a load of other people and trying not just to get along with them but also helping those who are having a harder time than us.

It’s about compassion for other human beings and about caring for our planet. It’s also about recognising that we’re not the only animals on the earth and valuing and protecting other species that we share our world with.

It’s challenging injustice and inequality and standing up for what you believe in. It’s about having respect for others and their rights and  for yourself.

And it’s about looking for the common threads that bind us all together not emphasising that which separates us.

Perhaps the greatest expression of what being human should really mean is contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948.

Times have changed; the world has changed but these rights, and the ideals that gave birth to them, are as important – in fact more so – than they were 60 years ago.
